2 fatally shot at memorial for Chicago murder victim

Relatives say family and friends had gathered Sunday night for a somber annual tradition – honoring the memory of 17-year-old Martell Barrett, who was shot and killed a few blocks away in 2009. As a group gathered on the porch of a home, a shooter wearing all dark clothing opened fire into the crowd from at least 30 yards away, the station reports.

Five people were struck, of those, two died. Family identified the murder victims as 38-year-old Davon Barrett and 26-year-old Devin Hamb. Barrett was Martell Barrett’s brother and Hamb was a friend.

Three other people were wounded in the shooting, including a 27-year-old man, a 23-year-old woman, and a 17-year-old boy.

Davon Barrett’s aunt, Quincetta Graham, told the station she’s “heartbroken” and “shattered to pieces” over the shooting.

“It’s like some days I wish that summer would never come, because when summer comes, it brings violence, and that’s just the reality that we have to live in,” Graham told the station. “…If we get 80 degrees, sunny, that means we’re kind of sitting back and saying somebody’s going to get shot today.”
