A smiling, smartly attired 30-year-old woman sits at an expansive table in a meeting room decorated with simple elegance on the fourth floor of a modern office building in central Tokyo.

He says he paid $25 million for his stake in the team, making him one of its smaller equity holders, but he’s still the public face of the franchise, prominent at the ballpark and press conferences announcing big signings. It’s the peak of the entrepreneurial rise that Johnson embarked on when he retired from the NBA for the first time in 1991.
