According to The New York Times, in the French case, a man returned from Rio de Janiero in February, where he had experienced Zika-like symptoms. He was healthy by the time he arrived back in France. In the following week and a half, he and his girlfriend had sex seven times, each time consisting of vaginal sex without ejaculation and oral sex with ejaculation. The woman then fell ill.
The case is not definite, as doctors cannot prove without a doubt the virus was transmitted via oral sex—especially based solely on the couple’s recollections of intercourse—but it does bring up the possibility that Zika can be transmitted more ways than vaginal intercourse and mosquito bites.
The first case of Zika in the United States appeared four months ago, and scientists still have much to learn, especially as the 2016 Olympics in Rio approach. And as Detroit Tigers pitcher Francisco Rodriguez warned athletes headed to Brazil, Zika is far worse than the common cold.
