Audit: Michigan failed to inspect 48% of food establishments on time

The report found that for 284 of the establishments, it had been between seven and 10 years since the last inspection.

The department said it did not have enough staff to perform all the inspections with the required frequencies, but it continues to request more staff and is making technological changes and taking other steps to improve productivity.

The audit found that the department needs about 10 more food safety inspectors than it has.

Restaurants, cafeterias, vending machines and temporary food vendors are licensed by the agriculture department based on recommendations by the local health department.
