Ben E. King Dies: “Stand By Me” Singer and R&B Legend Was 76

ben king 2Joined by the likes of Blondie singer Deborah HarryJoan Osbourne and Maura Kennedy, King himself took the stage at the 2014 John Lennon Tribute Benefit Concert in New York City to perform a group rendition of “Stand By Me.” It was his final major performance.

Singers and musicians from around the world also sang the song for the 2008 documentary Playing For Change: Peace Through Music.

R&B singer Gary U.S. Bonds, 75, paid tribute to King on his Facebook page after learning about his death.

“With an extremely heavy heart, I must say goodbye to one of the sweetest, gentlest and gifted souls that I have had the privilege of knowing and calling my friend for more than 50 years—Mr. Ben E. King,” he said. “Speaking for myself, my family & my Roadhouse Rockers family, I can tell you that Ben E. will be missed more than words can say. Our sincere condolences go out to Betty and the entire family. Thank you Ben E. for your friendship and the wonderful legacy you leave behind.”

Famed British Indian novelist Salman Rushdie also paid tribute to King online.
