Boy, 2, finds gun and shoots himself in Detroit

It happened on the 12000 block of Laing Street on Detroit’s east side.

Detroit Police Commander Eric Decker said the boy’s condition was upgraded after he underwent surgery. He described the shooting as a “very unfortunate accident.”

Decker said the weapon wasn’t secured.

“We have to be more diligent keeping our weapons away from children,” he said.

Police said the child’s parents were cooperating in the investigation.

No one has been arrested and the investigation is ongoing, Detroit Police spokeswoman Jennifer Watson said Tuesday afternoon.
