British PM Cameron to Resign by Wednesday

“She is strong, she is competent, she is more than able to provide the leadership that our country is going to need in the years ahead and she will have my full support,” Cameron said  in comments to reporters Monday.

Cameron said that on Wednesday he will attend the House of Commons for prime minister’s questions.

“After that I expect to go to the Palace and offer my resignation, so we will have a new prime minister in that building behind me by Wednesday evening,” he said.

May and energy minister Andrea Leadsom were expected to contest in a Conservative runoff to replace Cameron, who announced his resignation after failing to persuade British voters to choose to stay in the European Union in a referendum last month.

However earlier on Monday, Leadsom announced her withdrawal from the race leaving May as the sole candidate.

“A nine week leadership campaign” at a time when Britain is negotiating its withdrawal from the European Union is “highly undesirable,” Leadsom said adding that May is “ideally placed to implement Brexit on the best possible terms for the British people.”

Once confirmed May would be Britain’s first female prime minister since Margaret Thatcher.
