BTN Artist Spotlight (01/02/15) >>> DJ Butter Interview with Blacktruth.net

How would you categorize your style?

Raw hip-hop, smoothed out with a gangster appeal to it. BBD style!

What or who is the biggest influence in your music?

My dad, Run-DMC, Gang Starr and my late homie Illy-Ill.

What artist do you compare yourself to the most?

Grandmaster Flash mixed with DJ Clue mixed with Premier, on the Detroit tip.

What can we expect next from you and your career?

Film stuff. More of my production out there. Music with Boldy James and Wesley Valentine.

Detroit is a constant focus in your music. Do you think the city has seen the worst already or is the turnaround in effect?

We’re soldiers here. The turnaround has been happening, it’s just not a lot of black faces involved. But the city is growing. Detroit is the original city.

How did you bring Guilty Simpson and Kool G Rap together on the track “Chess Never Checkers”?

Guilty always keeps it real with me. I just wanted him to be on a track with an emcee he studied. My homie Konphlict of Tha Almighty Dreadnaughtz opened his studio up to us to record the track, the rest is history. You may see a video on that tune in a few. Go to www.fatbeats.com and get a copy of the album.

How did you land drug kingpin AZ Faison in the video for “Legends In The Game”?

Social media and a phone call. I hung out at his crib for an hour or so, just talking to him about life and the movie Paid In Full and we just got him on camera with my homie Dip. We did the video in Doug E. Fresh’s studio. That was some real bucket list shit!
