Charlie Wilson Ties Brian McKnight & Luther Vandross for Third-Most No. 1s on Adult R&B Songs Chart

The R&B veteran, who fronted The Gap Band from the 1970s until 2010, first scaled the summit with “Charlie Last Name: Wilson,” which led for six weeks in 2005. He returned to the perch with “There Goes My Baby” (nine weeks, 2009), “You Are” (13 weeks, 2010-11), “My Love Is All I Have” (five weeks, 2013) and the T.I.-assisted “I’m Blessed,” (two weeks, 2017).

Wilson’s six leaders now match the totals of Brian McKnight and Luther Vandrossfor the third-best sum since the chart began in 1993. The trio trail only Alicia Keys, with 10 toppers, and Maxwell and R. Kelly, who have each banked seven No. 1s.

With “Chills,” Wilson also attains two No. 1s on Adult R&B Songs from the same album for the first time in his career. The current champ and “Blessed” both appear on his 2017 album, In It to Win It, which became his sixth top 10 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart upon its No. 6 debut in March of last year.

Notably, “Chills” also gains on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, which measures audience detections for the genre’s adult and mainstream stations. There, the song darts 27-22 and sports a 20 percent bump to 10 million in audience in the week ending March 25.
