Chicago Teachers Not Only want More Support for Themselves but for Their Students

The Chicago teacher strike is on its ninth day and the protest is not just about the teachers. One of the sticking points for the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) is providing more counselor’s and social workers to assist with their students. “If you don’t work with the social-emotional issues that our students have, you’re never going to get to the education piece of it,” a school counselor told Alazeera News. “We need more wraparound services in the school, in which the social worker is there on a daily basis, the counsellor is there on a daily basis, the psychologist is there on a daily basis, not dealing with five schools [at once].”

According to the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), there should be one counselor and social worker for every 250 students. In 2018, Chicago had one counselor per 444 students, and one social worker per 1,238 students. The school district has more than 360,000 students in the district.

According to most of the protestors, this is a major problem. “If someone just got shot over the weekend, or you’re going hungry or you don’t have the appropriate resources in your home, you’re not going to come to school and say ‘Oh, let me listen to this math lesson or this reading lesson.’ You’re not thinking about that. And that’s when the students start acting out in the classroom, said one of the counselors. To read more about this story click here.
