A Florida jury consisting of five White women, two White men and one Black man awarded the family of Gregory Hill Jr, 30 , four dollars after concluding a police officer was not responsible for his killing in 2014. Even though Hill was shot three times, the jury decided that St. Lucie County deputy Christopher Newman was justified in killing Hill. They ruled that Hill was 99% responsible for his own death and that Newman’s partner Sheriff Ken Mascara was 1% responsible. As a result of the verdict they awarded Hill’s children who are 7,10 and 13 a dollar apiece and granted one dollar for funeral expenses. “That a black child’s pain is only worth a dollar is exactly the problem with the plight of the African-American right now. This says, black lives don’t matter,” the family attorney John Phillips said. Phillips is planning to file a motion for a new trial in U.S District Court and if he is unsuccessful he will then take it to US 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.
