Six years after the death of Eric Garner, another Black man is killed by police officers while telling them he “can’t breathe.” George Floyd was killed Monday night in Minneapolis by a police officer who had his knee on his neck. According to police, Floyd was arrested for forging documents at a store. They said he was “under the influence” but they were able to put him handcuffs.
Why the officer felt the need to apply his knee to Mr. Floyd neck after he was in handcuffs is not known. However it is definitely a cowardly act to exert force on someone who is not physically capable to defend their self. Bystanders who recorded the video of the incident could be heard saying “get off his neck.”
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey responded to the viral video by saying: “I believe what I saw, and what I saw was wrong at every level…Being Black in America should not be a death sentence.” The FBI is said to be investigating the incident , while the two cops will be put on paid administrative leave.
