Dallas Emcee Lejend talks Lyricism

 What’s your writing process?

I changed up my writing and recording process when I recorded the Slago project. I wrote and recorded the song then listened to it repeatedly and finalized the track. I really like for my song to come together organically. I am always writing and exploring for new ideas to write about. I was really deliberate with the topics and my words on this project.

What do you think is the biggest issue facing black people today?

I think we look to blame a lot of outside situations instead of looking at our own situation. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a lot of social injustices and racism. We need to strengthen our communities with proactive action plans. We need to build our schools and banks back in our community. We need to mentor our young black boys. I plan to give back to the community and not just talk about it on my songs. We have a water project that is about to launch and some other community-based initiatives. We need to stop the victim role and step up and be leaders.

Who’s your favorite author and why?

I love books. It’s hard to say. I love Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, Robert Greene. I have been reading Soul On Ice and 48 Laws Of Power. I want to read The Alchemist again. I feel like my songs and music are very similar their writings. I hope to document life and times and open people’s eyes to different situations. My writings are very emotional just like the authors I mention and I hope listeners feel that spirit in the music.

When can we expect another project and what can you tell us about it?

Very soon actually. I have already started recording it. My man Architect from Oakland is providing the soundscapes. he has worked with Opio, Planet Asia, and Prince Po to name a few. I have already laid to records. It’s just raw lyricism and some serious ass beats. We talk a lot about social issues, religion and being a father so we decide to put our ideas out through music. I will be traveling to Oakland soon to finalize the EP and shoot some footage. I am really looking forward to people to hear it. I have been recording like crazy lately. My creativity has been flowing like a river.
