Dark Skin vs. Light Skin: Colorism the Problem that Started Before Kodak Black and will Continue after Him

His statements cause a firestorm within Black social media. Kodak got a lot of  heat from bloggers, fans, critics, supporters and random women and men. However, the loudest bark probably came from Black women. Some expressed that they wouldn’t support his music anymore. While others threw insults and claimed they wouldn’t date him anyway.

The irony of Kodak Black talking about he doesn’t like black girls like any of us liked his ugly ass.

Kodak Black saying he wouldn’t date black women like we were really checking for that burnt dust mite.

There was so much backlash from his comments that he deleted his Twitter and IG accounts a couple days later. I’m guessing someone on his public relation team thought this might be a good idea if he wants to maintain his fan base and not illuminate his numerous legal troubles, which include an alleged rape and assault on a female at a strip club.

I think those legal problems and accusations are far worse than his comments on social media. In fact, I think his comments were harmless. Some people sided with Kodak, in which they felt his “preference” was just that; his prerogative. I agree with that, but his taste in women cannot be simplified to an individual choice. Like most things within the Black community, our individual choices, behavior and actions are rooted in a complex web of our history, struggle, success and environment. Sometimes I hate it has to be like this. A part of me desires that we can date who we want, buy gold chains and put rims on our cars without it being associated with ignorance or European brainwashing. Another part of me understand the psychology and plight of being slaves, in slavery and enslaved.

So when Kodak Black talks about liking light skin women; he is reinforcing colorism. One of the best presentations of colorism within Black arts and entertainment can be seen in Spike Lee’s movie School Daze

In real life one of the best examples of colorism is the perception or reality that most of  the successful Black men prefer to have light skin Black women or White women as their wives and girlfriends. I said perception or reality because I don’t have actual statistics on how many Black men choose White women and light skin women over dark skin women.

Real or fake, I think this is where a lot of the dislike of Kodak Black’s comments comes from. For one, he is successful. Weather you know him or not, he has songs on the radio and has work with some of the biggest name s in music, including Chris Brown French Montana and DJ Khaled

Regardless of how many women who are calling him ugly and so forth, he still can get the woman he wants. The majority of  women who are talking about they won’t date him are lying. Women of all colors, size and ages are attracted to success and fame. And he is no exception to the rule. Besides if Flavor Flav can have Flavor of Love and pick who he wants from a group of women; then Kodak Black definitely can get who he wants.
