Democrats offer prayers for Republican colleagues after shooting at congressional baseball practice

According to multiple accounts, a gunman opened fire during the practice outside the nation’s Capitol. Multiple people — including Republican House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (La.), a congressional aide, and two Capitol Police officers — were shot. Police say the shooting suspect is in custody in a D.C. hospital.

Democratic Rep. Ruben Kihuen (Nev.) tweeted a photo of members of the Democrats’ baseball team at their practice facility with their heads bowed in prayer for their colleagues.

“My heart is heavy right now,” Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) wrote on Twitter. “We just said a prayer for our colleagues and are holding to leave [Democrat] baseball practice.”

My heart is heavy right now. We just said a prayer for our colleagues and are holding to leave Dem baseball practice.

Other Democrats offered prayers as well:

Our Dem baseball team was practicing when we heard news. We’re safe & with police, everyone praying for GOP colleagues, staff & Cap police

At baseball practice, hearing about the unthinkable horrific news. Practice shut down. Dems join-in prayer for our R colleagues & those hit. https://twitter.com/ChadPergram/status/874956706819846144

The Democrats and Republicans are preparing for Thursday’s annual congressional baseball game, which raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity.
