DJ Empty Interview with Blacktruth.net

What’s your process for creating beats?
My process for making beats is pretty simple. In general, I’ll sit down at the keyboard, smoke a lot of weed and start playing with drum sounds. I come from a drumming background so that’s always what I go to first and once I get a good drum beat rolling I kind of hear the music playing along in my head with drums and try and translate that to recording as best as I can. Sometimes I’ll have a sample in mind that I want to use and I’ll usually revolve the piece around that sample. I don’t usually have much of a plan of attack when I sit down to make music. I just kind of let it flow and what gets created gets created – and not all of it is great.

How do you prefer to work with emcees?
As far as working with emcees on my beats goes, in the past I would call someone up and tell them that I have a track entitled “Carnivean” named after the demon saint of lewd and obscene behavior, take that idea and run. I like to give emcees as much freedom to be creative within the concept of the track. I would say that everyone I approached welcomed the challenge with open arms and certainly delivered the goods. I’ve also deejayed for countless bands and rappers and that’s something that I do enjoy a lot. Theres a certain brotherhood or camaraderie that comes along with working in a band. Even if you’re in a group with a bunch of assholes, theres still something special about having your crew. Your band. Your brothers (and sisters).

What are your plans for 2015?
Right now I’m working on a soundtrack for a short film directed by Valerian Zamel, the same person that directed the “Michael” video. Im talking a break from doing the club DJ thing to work on this soundtrack and “Demonology Vol. 2” as well putting together a live show for the album.
