There is a long list of legendary coaches in Chicago High School basketball history; then there is Dorothy Gaters. The 72-year-old girl’s basketball coach at Marshall High School on Chicago’s West Side is iconic. No other coach in Illinois High School Basketball history, men or women has more victories (1,106) than Gaters. Her teams have never had a losing record in the 43 years of her coaching. She has been to 27 state finals and won 9 state championships. Quite simply, she has epitomized a standard of excellence that no one has come close to duplicating.
