The group fell apart in 1993 after the death of MF DOOM’s brother DJ Subroc. He disappeared from the music scene entirely, but reemerge in 1998 by performing at an open mic show with a stocking on his face. The mysteriousness of his identity carried on throughout his entire solo career. He started to wear a mask that was patterned after Marvel Comics super-villain Doctor Doom.
He dropped his debut solo album Operation: Doomsday in 1999. From there he dropped more albums and collaborated with some of the most respected artists in Hip Hop. “RIP to another Giant your favorite MC’s MC .. MF DOOM!! crushing news…,” Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest tweeted out.
Although, you might didn’t know who he was, or was not a big fan of his music, it is important to note his influence.
He was a guy who inspired some of your favorite artists. It doesn’t seem coincidental that he died on Halloween. And it doesn’t seem weird that it took over a month for the public to find out and his cause of death his unknown. It wouldn’t be right if wasn’t mysterious, that is the legend of MF DOOM.
