Perhaps the biggest hurdle facing wearable tech is that it doesn’t seem all that useful yet. So far, wearable tech prototypes don’t seem able to do much that your smartphone can’t, and all while getting in the way and maybe looking kind of wack too.

Well, Apple, thinking different as usual, may have found a function for its rumored iWatch that is not only useful, but potentially lifesaving.

Apple Insider reports that Barclays analyst Blayne Curtis is hinting that the iWatch will likely house UV index sensors made by Silicon Labs of Austin, Tx. These sensors measure UV light and could alert wearers to potential sunburns, in addition to helping track heart rate, pulse, and blood oxygen saturation, creating the potential that the iWatch could someday offer a holistic health monitoring system. Which is epic for consumers and Apple alike, because we all know that instant access to + total health + puppy videos + James Bond stealth sexting capabilities = $ALES.
