Freedom Denied

Eye to Eye

One of those nations that want a piece of the pie is Palestine. Engaged in never ending peace talks with Israel, the Palestinian government decided to take their cause to the United Nations Committee. On September 23, 2011, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas put in a petition to the UN officials for Palestine’s statehood.

Meaning he wants Palestine to be recognized as a nation and governing body by the international community. The reasoning behind the petition presumably is to gain some type of leverage during negotiations with the Israeli Government. Israel was granted statehood in 1948; and since then has been in an on going feud with the Palestinian people over territorial boundaries, and also for the right to claim the historical city of Jerusalem as their capital. Backed by the mighty forces of the United States Government, Israel has maintained the upper hand in the peace negotiations. Despite America’s allegiance to Israel, President Obama has said that Palestine should get an independent state and made mention of it again during his UN speech. “One year ago I stood at this podium and call for an independent Palestine” he said “I believe then and I believe now that the Palestinian people deserve a state of their own.”
