Shine Blockers

But Obama wasn’t at the United Nations as an advocate for Palestine; he was there to stop their bid for statehood. “I’m convinced there is no shortcut to the end of conflict that has endured for decades,” Obama said sternly. “Peace is hard work” he continued “peace will not come through statements and resolutions at the United Nations… if it was that easy it would be accomplished by now.” He stated that “the question isn’t the goal we seek but the question is how we reach that goal.” For some reason when I heard him say that, I thought of my old Calculus teacher who demanded that we show our work when presenting an answer to our math problem. He would say “if you don’t show your work then you won’t get credit for your work.”

I failed Calculus; and Palestine failed in his quest to become a member of the United Nations. On November 11th, 2011, the UN Security Council’s Admission of New Members Committee vetoed Palestine petition for independence.   Palestine needed nine votes to qualify, it got only eight. It is speculated publicly and privately that the council member’s feared some type of backlash from the United States government if it would have gave approval to the Palestinian people. UNESCO, (UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) the world’s body’s cultural agency found that out the hard way. On Oct. 31st 2011, UNESCO officials voted to give Palestine full membership on its committee board.

Immediately thereafter a US State Department spokesperson announced that they will not be sending UNESCO the $60 million dollar payment that was schedule for November 2011. Israel followed suit by dismissing its two million dollar donation to UNESCO as well.
