General Mills Further Expands Flour Recall After 4 More Fall Ill From E. Coli

The recall announced Monday covers several varieties of Gold Medal and Signature Kitchens flour produced on certain dates through February 10, 2016.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said flour produced at a General Mills plant in Kansas City, Missouri, is a likely source of the outbreak, which so far has sickened 46 people in 21 states — including Michigan.

The CDC says 13 have been hospitalized, and one person has developed a type of kidney failure. No deaths have been reported.

General Mills says the illnesses have been connected with consumers who ate or handled uncooked dough or ate uncooked batter made with raw flour.

Specific products recalled include the following: 13.5 ounce Gold Medal Wondra, 2lb Gold Medal All Purpose Flour, 10lb Gold Medal All Purpose Flour, 5lb Gold Medal All Purpose Flour, 5lb Gold Medal Self Rising Flour, 4.25lb Gold Medal All Purpose Flour, 5lb Gold Medal Unbleached Flour, 2lb Signature Kitchens All Purpose Flour Enriched Bleached, 5lb Signature Kitchens Unbleached Flour All Purpose Enriched, 13.5oz Gold Medal Wondra Flour, 2lb Gold Medal All Purpose Flour, 2lb Gold Medal Self-Rising Flour, 10lb Gold Medal All Purpose Flour.

According to the FDA, people of any age can become infected. Veryyoung children and the elderly are more likely than others to develop severe illness and HUS, but even healthy older children and young adults can become seriously ill.

Health officials urge consumers to contact their healthcare provider if they have diarrhea that lasts for more than three days, or is accompanied by high fever, blood in the stool, or so much vomiting that they cannot keep liquids down and they pass very little urine.

Consumers with additional questions should contact the company at 800-230-8103. The FDA encourages consumers with questions about food safety to call 1-888-SAFEFOOD Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. EST.
