South Carolina Panthers Greg Hardy has become the third NFL player in a week to be reprimanded by the league for physically violent crimes. The Pro Bowl defensive end was deactivated for the Panthers’ game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday. In July, Hardy was convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend and threatening to kill her during an altercation in May. On Friday, coach Ron Rivera said the team would not change its initial stance of keeping Hardy on the team. Though the Panthers placed Hardy on the inactive list for Sunday’s game, the team said it will not address questions about his long-term status until after the game. There was renewed attention on Hardy after the Baltimore Ravens released Ray Rice when footage of him punching his now-wife was posted last week. The Minnesota Vikings also deactivated Adrian Peterson after he was charged with reckless or negligent injury to a child. Hardy has appealed the verdict, and the trial is tentatively set for November 17.
