Hear Queen Key’s Audacious Pop-Rap on “Am I Wrong”

Staff Writer

Queen Key knows exactly who she is and what she wants. The 21-year-old Chicago rapper already asserted her playful, no-fucks-given attitude in the banger “My Way,” in which she turned a cheeky phrase—“My way or the highway”—into a shout-along anthem. But on “Am I Wrong,” the opening track from her new mixtape Eat My Pussy, Queen Key proves that she’s more than just a fun personality with catchy hooks—she can spit straight bars, too.

A more vicious Queen emerges on “Am I Wrong,” firing off cocky rhymes, bragging about extorting men, being an “intelligent bad bitch,” and comparing herself to both Cleopatra and Lauryn Hill. Her venomous lines are complemented by a weighty Mike Larry-produced beat driven by beefy 808 drums and menacing synths. Queen’s audacious sense of humor shines through it all: “My pussy, my palace/My shit get ate up like salad.” But what really powers the song is her urgent energy, especially when she chants her hook: “Am I wrong if I know that you damaged?/Am I wrong if I’m kinda imbalanced?/Am I wrong if I accept the challenge?” Queen Key is self-aware and self-assured enough to know the answer already: She’s not “wrong.” She’s just daring you to dispute her.
