ICE Released 169 Immigrants Convicted of Homicide-Related Crimes in 2013

In 2013, records show ICE deported 368,644 immigrants; 216,810 had criminal records.

In an Aug. 15 letter to Grassley, DHS official Thomas Winkowski argued that under the law, “ICE had no discretion” in issuing the release of immigrants convicted of crimes. Winkowski maintains ICE is required to release some immigrants with records because they are “eligible for bond” or have “deteriorated health” or “advanced age.”

Winkowski also said that of the 169 immigrants with homicide convictions who were released for DHS custody, the vast majority have been deported or are about to be. The immigrants were released into a vast array of communities, from Denver to Atlanta.
