Ice storm: About 33,000 customers still in the dark

Last weekend’s ice storm left some 300,000 Toronto customers without power at the peak of the crisis.

Toronto District School Board spokeswoman Shari Schwartz-Maltz said there are still about 200 schools suffering outages, and all facilities will be closed for safety inspection.

Schwartz-Maltz added that the closure includes some 300 child care units, and the inspections involve more than 600 sites, many of which suffered roof damage, water seepage or flooding.

Power Steam reported 956 customers still without heat and light in York Region Friday morning. Veridian Connections said 1,000 homes had no electricity in Ajax-Pickering as of noon Dec. 26. In Oshawa, fewer than 150 customers were still in the dark Friday morning, Oshawa PUC said.

About 8,000 Brampton homes were plunged back into darkness for 90 minutes on Boxing Day when three main feeders lost power briefly, but as of Friday morning only 500 customers in the city remain without power.
