Is Cardi B Building Her Music Career Off Other People’s Music?

Her recent song “Bartier Cardi” has been getting a lot of airplay and has generated some buzz on the streets. However, there has been backlash from people who said she stole the song from an artist name Tommy Genesis. The songs do not have the same names or lyrics, but the flow and cadence are similar. This is not the first time that Cardi B has been called out for stealing another artist’s style. Her single “Bodak Yellow,” is a direct rip off Kodak Black’s song “No Flockin.”  The thing about that was Cardi B gave acknowledgment to Kodak by practically naming her song after him. Not only that, she gave writing credit to him, which not only earned him a check but a Grammy nomination.

However, in the case of Cardi B’s new “Bartier Cardi” song, she has not made mention of Tommy Genesis. She has not said the flow has come from Genesis’s “Tommy” song. She hasn’t even said that the song was inspired by Tommy Genesis’s “Tommy” song. After listening to it, I think they are similar. I posted both songs below and you can make your own judgment.

Could it be that she thought no one would notice because Tommy Genesis is not as famous as Kodak Black? Or could it be that Cardi B doesn’t want people to realize that she is not capable of creating original music on her own?

Either way, her story as an artist highlights one of the negative aspects of the music business. They have a history of pushing talent aside, for the sake of generating revenue through what is hot. Cardi built a buzz through her role on Love and Hip Hop, and the record companies wanted to capitalize on it. If you are old enough to remember Milli Vanili, then you know that record labels will go to incredible lengths to make hits and create stars. It is not the first time that it has happened, and probably won’t be the last. In the end, I guess we can say at least Cardi B is not lip-singing her songs; or is she?
