The embattled singer, and new mother traced her struggle with low self-esteem to feelings of inferiority that persisted through her childhood, the pressures of which resulted in her yielding to impossibly high standards. “Of course there are always the societal issues of racism and sexism. Put it all together and depression is a tenacious and scary condition,” Janet wrote. “Thankfully, I found my way through it.”
