Josh McCown thinks he’s better than Jay Cutler

McCown tried to stay “diplomatic,” but only to an extent.

“I hope Jay thinks he’s better than me and I think I’m better than Jay,” McCown said. “We’re both competitors and that was the beauty in that situation. But in the role on that team, I served him as a backup.”

By some measures, McCown was the best quarterback in the league last year, pacing the NFL in QBR (85.1) and interception percentage, tossing just one pick compared to 13 TDs. Meanwhile, Cutler threw 19 TDs and 12 INTs in the 11 games he appeared in.

McCown went on to credit Marc Trestman’s offensive system and admitted while he and Cutler are similiar, they both have different strengths.

“Jay — his upside, his arm strength, obviously his age — all those things considered, I believe the sky is the limit for him,” the 34-year-old veteran said. “And another year in the system that he’s going to have…I think he’s really going to take off and excel.”

After some more prodding from Patrick, McCown later agreed that as a leader on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers — his new team — and in the huddle, the veteran needs to have the confidence that he’s better than a guy like Cutler.

After all, the Bucs do play the Bears in 2014.

“Obviously, the [Bucs] want to know from my aspect — Do I feel like I’m better than Jay? Yeah,” McCown said. “Because I’m going in there and I’m leading the team and they’ve gotta know that I feel confident in that.”
