Judging the RZA and DJ Premier Song Battle: It was Epic but DJ Premier could have done more and got the Victory

On the flip side of the coin, I was disappointed in DJ Premier’s performance. I have heard people say that he won or it was a draw. In my opinion, I think it was close, but I have to give the nod to RZA. I think one Preemo’s downfalls was he didn’t play enough Gang Starr songs. I know he has done some amazing songs with other artists but he left out of a lot of music from his group.

Just going through the tale of the tape between the classic albums from RZA and DJ Premier, you will see where I’m coming from. The 36 Chambers Album, Only Built for Cuban Links (the “Purple Tape), Liquid Swords, and possibly Iron Man are all classics. Plus, Tical and Return from 36 Chambers from ODB have some dope joints on there. This is not counting the songs from Supreme Clientele and Wu-Tang Clan’s Forever album.  That’s almost 10 albums worth of dopeness created by RZA. Once again, I repeat that is hard for any producer to compete with.

However, the Moment of Truth, and Hard to Earn albums from Gang Starr are bonafide classics. Daily Operation and Step in the Arena are not classic albums but they do have some classic songs on there. Premier only played one song from each of those albums. I can list about 20 songs from that catalog that he could have played. Preem why you didn’t play “Who’s Gonna Take the Weight?” or “Code of the Streets”? What about “Take it Personal” or “Royalty” ?
