While Davenport was undeniably the killer (witnesses said they saw him over her body), the judge chose not to convict him of second degree murder. Davenport’s lawyer argued that he was high on PCP when he killed Hines, causing him to shout things like “I love you. I always loved you. God would have wanted this.”

In a piece we wrote around the time of this young woman’s death, we provided some scoop into what exactly transpired between Hines and Davenport. Apparently, they were performing a “quasi-exorcism” while high. Davenport allegedly chanted “Get out, devils! I cast you out, devils! In the name of Jesus Christ, I cast you out!” as he was stabbing Hines.

While we weren’t privy to the exact details that were given to the judge about what happened between the two when Hines was killed, Davenport being on drugs in itself made the judge come to the conclusion that he was not acting out of malice, which is why he was acquitted of murder.

Davenport is now facing 25 years in prison. No sentencing date is known at this time, and Morgan Freeman has made no comment.

Freeman released a statement after Hines was killed in 2015 that reflected on who she could have been to the world and who she was to the people that knew her.

“The world will never know her artistry and talent, and how much she had to offer,” he said. “Her friends and family were fortunate enough to have known what she meant as a person.”
