What do you think is the cultural and social responsibility of an African-American rapper today, if any?

In that sort of question, “responsibility” sounds like such a big word. I don’t think that by virtue of being African-American and then deciding one day you want to rap that you suddenly take on some unwritten responsibility to anything. It’s just rap. You can use it to make a difference or you can use it to piss around. It’s up to the rapper. for a hip-hop nerd like me, that opens up the issue of rapper vs. MC. From my understanding, 99% of rappers are only going to have one responsibility and that is making money. Black or white, you have people to make money for. For MCs black or white, to me, your only responsibility is to further nurture the culture of hip hop, and that transcends race. Again, this is if you’re a hip-hop nerd like me.
