Last night made it that much worse when they went out in front of their own crowd and lost to the lowly New York Knicks. Following the game, Celtics star Kyrie Irving was already unhappy about the loss, but when he was told “Happy Thanksgiving” by multiple reporters, he responded with, “F–k Thanksgiving.”
Less than 24 hours, he took to Twitter and apologized for his comments.
Irving has a legit reasoning for his scathing response. He confirmed that his opposition to the much-celebrated American holiday comes from his Native American heritage.
“Irving’s family has roots with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in North Dakota. His late mother was a part of the tribe and adopted out of it, while his grandparents and great-grandparents were citizens of Standing Rock.
To him and many others with Native American heritage, Thanksgiving does not represent a time to feast on the harvest, but rather it reminds them of the genocide and conquest of Native Americans by the colonists.”
The Celtics star has a tribal logo tattooed on the back of his neck and was given the name “Little Mountain” when he visited the tribe this summer and was welcomed with a homecoming celebration that included a naming ceremony.
