Melanie Fiona, Angie Stone, Terri J. Vaughn meet and greet for ‘da Kink in My Hair’

“Da Kink in My Hair” debuted at the Toronto Fringe Festival in 2001. The play’s central character is Novelette, the Caribbean Canadian owner of Letty’s, a Toronto hair salon. Novelette is forced to confront her goals and ideals in life when she receives news that her onetime boyfriend Cedric, who loaned her the money to open the salon, has died and his daughter Verena is demanding repayment of the loan. This play gives voices to eight black women who tell their unforgettable stories in a kaleidoscope of drumming, singing and dance. It is a true testament to the challenges and triumphs in the lives of contemporary black women; many are immigrants to North America from the Caribbean. The mixture of laughter and tears, revelation and inspiration, the unapologetically intense stories of each woman are woven together in this powerful piece.

“Da Kink in my Hair” has won four NAACP awards and has sold out shows in Canada and London, England! The stage show was adapted to a successful television series and will debut at the Cobb Energy Center from September 6th–8th, 2013.
