Mexico’s Supreme Court rules that it is Unconstitutional to Punish Women who have an Abortion

On Tuesday, Mexico’s Supreme Court ruled unanimously to decriminalize abortion in their country. The ruling will void several provisions of law from Coahuila- a state on Texas’s northern border. For the time being, the decision will apply to Coahuila, but according to President Arturo Zaldivar, the “obligatory criteria for all of the country’s judges.” Four states—Mexico City, Oaxaca, Veracruz, and Hidalgo— allow abortion in most circumstances. The other 28 states in the country penalize abortion with some exceptions.
