Milwaukee teenager seriously wounded in shooting during second night of violent protests over Sylville Smith shooting

The 18-year-old was shot when gunfire broke out while protesters marched near Sherman Park, and officers rushed him to a hospital in an armored car, police said. It remains unclear where the gunfire came from, and no suspects have been arrested or named.

The teen was not identified and there were no updates on his condition early Monday morning.

The tensions in Milwaukee over the police shooting of 23-year-old Sylville Smith only escalated Sunday night, even after Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker activated the National Guard and local officials pleaded for peace.

The second night of protests saw sporadic gunfire, vehicles going up in flames and protesters chucking items at police officers. This followed an initial night of unrest, when protesters torched six buildings and seven squad cars, and a police officer suffered a concussion after being struck by a rock tossed through a car window.

It was not immediately clear if there were arrests Sunday night. The first night of protests ended with 17 arrests.

The turmoil erupted over the weekend after a black police officer shot and killed Smith, who fled from a traffic stop with a stolen gun. Police said the officer fired the fatal shots at Smith after he refused orders to drop the weapon.

The officer who shot Smith has not been identified.
