Neo-Nazi Extremist Groups Using Sesame Street Character to Recruit

It is reported that when local police searched the men’s residences they found more Neo-Nazi literature on computers as well as more leaflets in which Cookie Monster was again portrayed as a mascot for the extremist organization.  The Cookie Monster mascot has appeared in other neo-Nazi organizations literature, and police believe the organizations are using it as a way to appear cool and relevant to younger potential recruits while appearing harmless to parents.

This is not the first time a Sesame Street character has been used to communicate a controversial political message.  In 1998, a website was used to push the idea that Sesame Street character Bert had dealt with villains such as Osama bin Laden and Hitler.  It is still unclear why this particular neo-Nazi organization decided to use Cookie Monster as a mascot over other Sesame Street characters, but it’s use has caught on with multiple groups who identify themselves as having neo-Nazi political beliefs.

Most neo-Nazi’s identify with Adolf Hitler’s ideology and believe in the notion of the supremacy of a pure, Aryan race.  They are considered a fringe movement, and no matter what mascot they choose, their ideologies will most likely remain outside the mainstream of the cultures where they choose to operate.
