New Baby Has Gabrielle Union in Heaven but People are Still Throwing Shade: Does Having a Surrogate Lessens the Experience of Being a Mother?

Gabby has been open about her fertility struggles and revealed her lack of ability to conceived may have been due to adenomyosis. The condition “occurs when the tissue that normally lines the uterus grows into the muscular wall of the uterus. The displaced tissue continues to act normally — thickening, breaking down and bleeding — during each menstrual cycle.”

The 45 year old actress said she has been struggling with the condition since her 20’s and has had multiple miscarriages.  “Towards the end of my fertility journey I finally got some answers, because everyone said ‘You’re a career woman, you’ve prioritized your career, you waited too long and now you’re just too old to have a kid — and that’s on you for wanting a career. The reality is I actually have adenomyosis,” Gabby said.

The Being Mary Jane star gave insight on how tough her journey has been.“For three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant,” Gabby said. “I’ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle or coming out of an IVF cycle.” The struggles of Gabrielle having a baby led her to getting a surrogate. It seems the decision was well worth it because Gabby seems overwhelmed and overjoyed.

Despite her happiness, it seems that people having throwing some shade at her for having a surrogate. Although the good comments outweighed the bad, some people thought her pictures and experience was not genuine since she wasn’t the one who gave birth.

“I just need to know why you’re laying there like you just went through 17 hours of labor. Mocking real moms who experienced labor.” one comment said.

“A baby is a gift. A gift is given, not demanded. A baby is not a right” said someone else

“Wow, well first of all well done to the surrogate for all the hard work. That takes one hell of a woman.”  read another comment

I personally feel like  if you are happy, then I am happy for you. In the case of Gabrielle Union, I feel like she tried and it didn’t work, so she went another route. I’m not a woman so I will never be able to understand the feeling of carrying a baby and going through labor. However, I asked this question when Kim Kardashian and Kanye had a baby; does having a surrogate lessens the experience? An example of this is in the Bible, with the story of Abraham. He and his wife Sarah could not conceive a child, and Sarah offered her handmaid Hagar to have the child for her. However when Hagar had the child, she became jealous of Sarah and was mistreated by Sarah. Hagar was distraught and ultimately fled into the wilderness. Despite having a son already, God told Abraham that he would give him another son with his wife Sarah. Abraham was at the age of 100 years old and said ‘Shall a child be born unto him that is a hundred years old?  The answer was yes and God allowed his wife to have a son.

I wanted to share that story because I do feel like having a baby is a blessing from God. However do you feel like you can receive that blessing in other forms? What do you think? Leave your comments below
