New Year, New You!

  1. “I hate it!!”One reason why people don’t keep their New Year’s resolution is because they internalize something negative to their goal.  You will hear a person say “I hate exercise but I’m going to do it to lose this extra belly fat.”  That is too negative a thought to have about what you’re doing if you are serious about sustaining your New Year’s resolution.  Most people can’t do something they hate over a long period of time, even knowing it will benefit them over the long run.  So to keep your New Year’s resolution, you will use the negativity of someone else.  Step 1: Figure out who is your “hater” friend (we all have one).  Instead of setting a goal to lose weight, your new goal is to tell them every time you lose a pound!  Yep your goal isn’t to lose weight but to make someone close to you really jealous.  Post pictures on facebook, instagram, etc… of your banging new body.

    2.  “Tell everyone” My favorite inventor had this habit of calling a press conference when he had an Idea for a new invention.  The public pressure would be so high after his announcement that it would force him to focus on creating his new invention.  So my suggestion for you is to inform everyone you know of your New Year’s Resolution and ask them to constantly check in on your progress.  You can trust that people will ask you if you have been hitting the gym, even if it’s to see if you have given up.  Utilize the energy from the expectations you put on yourself to fuel your desire to stay focused on your goal.  (Siddiqu “The Personal Trainer” new year’s resolution is to be able to do 50 pull-ups in a row!!)

    3.  “How low can you go”  To insure you stay focused on your New Year’s resolution set a very low bar for yourself.  The lower the better!  People kill me when they have not exercised in 4 years and then New Year’s comes around and they say they want to run a marathon!  What!  Set a goal so low that you can hit it, success breeds success, so when you hit your first goal it will give you the zeal to want to attack your next goal.  Give yourself one week to complete each goal.
    ·       Create a new exercise playlist for the gym, on my i-pod (download 100 new songs)
    ·       Buy a gym bag and fill it up with gym clothes and a towel
    ·       Make a schedule and put exercise on it every week for a month
    ·       Buy 20 Gatorades
Use these three tips and you will still be working out, getting toned, losing weight, running races, come this time next year.  Instead of being that person who sets the same exercise New Year’s resolutions every year.
