‘No Sign Of Life’ In Washington Mudslide Search

An aerial view of area affected by landslide near State Route 530 near Oso, WashingtonSearch and rescue teams took to the air in helicopters and the ground on foot looking for anyone who might still be alive.

“We didn’t see or hear any signs of life out there today,” Snohomish County Fire District 21 Chief Travis Hots said.

“It’s very disappointing to all emergency responders on scene.”

Rescuers at one point heard shouts for help from under the debris, raising hopes, but nobody was found.

The deep slide of mud, rock and trees bulldozed six homes and blocked the highway and river in Oso, 17 miles (27km) east of Arlington.

Three people were confirmed dead on Saturday, and five more bodies were pulled out on Sunday.

More people remain missing with authorities saying the number is “fluid”.

On Sunday, they said at least 18 were unaccounted for, but authorities have said some may have been able to get out on their own.

The number missing could also change because some people may have been in cars and on roads when the slide hit, they said.
