Chicago artist and investor Theaster Gates bought an old bank building on Chicago’s Southside for $1 dollar in 2012. He then rehabbed the building and turned it into a cultural center for the community. Following the death of legendary house DJ Frankie Knuckles in 2014, his foundation decided to use the cultural center as a display for Frankie’s vinyls. The third floor of Stony Island Trust & Savings Bank Building has become a public display of over 5,000 of Frankie Knuckles records.  “We need to be able to tell the history of house music—and he being the godfather, what better way than through him'” says Randy Crumpton, the attorney who represents Frankie Knuckles estate.
