Brooklyn producer Spencer Bellamy met his partner Apollos at a church in Mt. Vernon New York. The two connected to form their current group Patchwork Bessie. They have a new self titled EP that’s dropping and sent their first video “One Night Stand” to the Black Truth News. The track features British singer Desi Valentine and will appear on their EP. “I found Desi on Kickstarter. I thought his style would be a great match for the track. I sent him the track and he came up with the song by the next day” Spencer said about the collaboration. The two talked more about the song and their EP in our interview with them. Was there something about the state of hip-hop that spurred you to move away from the genre?

No, it wasn’t so much the state of hip hop that made me move away from the genre. It was more about allowing myself to grow as a producer. Rick Rubin has produced all genres of music, he’s not just a hip-hop producer. I’m striving to do the same – challenge myself, expand my horizons, and allow myself to create and think outside of the box. Once I allowed myself to let grow and not just stick to one genre, I became more creative. I love it. Now am I disappointed with the state of hip hop somewhat? Yes. There are exceptions who continue to push the envelope and who I really admire like Kendrick, Cole, K.R.I.T., and Jay Electronica. A lot of what I hear now all sounds the same, from the beat to the cadence of the rhyme and the topics even to the dances. It’s all the same or it’s gone.
