The Drink Champs podcast has become renowned for producing some of the best rap industry stories. On the most recent episode, Q-Tip, Jarobi, along with Busta Rhymes and Consequence, talked about Phife’s death, the new album and ended up recalling Skateboard P just missing the cut.

According to Tip, in the early 1990s, P would travel back and forth from Virginia to New York, as he was gaining traction on the production scene. During one time hanging out in the studio with the group, P recorded a verse for Midnight Marauders.

He would later submit beats for the group’s follow up 1996 LP, Beats, Rhymes & Life.

P didn’t make the cut for either project, but it’s safe to say he’s gone on to have a successful career.

Nearly 20 years later, he would appear on the “Bonita Applebum (Remix)” off the re-issue of ATCQ’s debut album Peoples’ Instinctive Travels And The Paths of Rhythm.

Other topics touched on during convo included the origins of the song “I Left My Wallet in El Segundo,” and Q-Tip making beats on Nas’ classic debut Illmatic.

Tip also discussed his feelings on Kanye West’s recent antics. “I will continue to reach and talk to my nigga, personally,” he said. “We not from that pedigree that we talk to niggas publicly, airing shit out. That’s my man and it’s my family, so we gon’ have our talk and we gon’ be aiight.”
