Pimp Chronicles: Is Social Media Turning Women into Hoes and Hoes into Goddess?

By most accounts, a lot of people will conclude that this was a simple picture of a woman proud of her health progress and confident about her body. From my perspective, I saw a woman promoting her body, soliciting attention, companionship and possibly sex. To be blunter, I’m going to say she was selling pussy!

When I mentioned this to my friend, she started laughing and said: “How can you say a woman is selling pussy, just because she is posting a picture of herself on social media?”  That is a good question and I’m going trying to answer it. Hopefully, I will do so in a sensible and respectful way that won’t get me killed from the sistas who are probably already reading this with a side eye.

Let me start off by telling a story. Back when I was in college, the late civil rights activist Dick Gregory came to our school and spoke. I went to hear him talk and he said something that was very controversial and outright offensive. He talked about the death of JonBenet  Ramsey. You may or may not remember Jon Benet Ramsey; she was a child beauty pageant star who got killed in 1996 when she was just six years old. Her death made national headlines, she was found in the basement of her home with her skull broken and a ransom note attached to her.

When speaking about her life and demise, Mr. Gregory said emphatically that  “she was a hoe!” I remember the shock on everyone faces when he said that. During the Q&A after his speech, a White girl asked him why would he say something so harsh about a little girl. “Listen,” he said calmly. Then he raised his voice and  said: “she was a hoe; that’s what I said and I meant it!” I could be wrong, but as I recalled, his premise was that her parents were basically prostituting her. He pointed out, that they put her in make-up, short dresses and had her parade in front of adult judges for a prize. That’s why he called her a hoe. I didn’t agree with his statement, but I understood where he was coming from. Likewise, you may not agree with what I’m saying, but you may see my perspective.
