Props to Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms for Stepping Up to the Fight against Police Injustice towards Blacks

Not long after the video surfaced online, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms held a press conference condemning the shooting. She stated that she didn’t think it was a justified use of force and called for the officer’s termination. Bottoms added that she firmly “firmly believes that there is a distinction between what you can do and what you should do.”

In the aftermath of the George Floyd murder, this is the second time that the Atlanta Mayor has acted swiftly towards their city police officers when their actions have been questionable. The first incident occurred when police officers were caught on camera snatching two college students out their car and tasering them. Within 24 hours of the incident, the officers were fired. In addition to the removal of those police officers, the Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields has also stepped down from her office.

In the wake of all the protests around the country, it seems unbelievable that officers are still gunning down people. On the other hand, I shouldn’t expect anything different to change based on the history of this country and the police officers. However, it is refreshing to see a Black woman in a position of power utilize her influence to try to make a change. Obviously, things are not going to change overnight, but I do want to applaud Keisha Lance Bottoms for her efforts. Hopefully her actions can influence other politicians to follow her lead.
