Rally for Imprisoned Meek Mill Planned in Philadelphia

A poster for the event reads: “Our criminal justice system has failed Meek Mill and millions of others like him. We stand for justice.” The poster for the event, scheduled for 5 p.m., features the by-now-familiar hashtags #justice4meek and #freemeekmill.

I stand for @meekmill. I hope my city does the same.

According to Fox 29, among those expected to attend the rally are Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins and Philadelphia 76ers legend Julius “Dr. J.” Erving. According to TMZ, Mills’ attorney, Joe Tacopina, claimed he’s filing a motion for the judge in the case to remove herself from the case, and plans to file an official complaint with the judicial conduct board over Common Pleas Judge Genece Brinkley’s decision to sentence the rapper (born Robert Williams) to two to four years in prison for violating his probation in a 2008 gun and drugs case.

The sentence has drawn a flood of outrage from supporters and many in the hip-hop community, who feel the punishment is above and beyond what the Wins and Losses MC deserved in the case. Last week, Tacopina told Billboard. “She [Brinkley] showed up at his community service for the homeless people. She showed up and sat at the table. She’s a judge. You could pull any judge in America and ask them how many times they’ve showed up at a community service for a probation and the answer is zero.”

Tacopina has claimed that Brinkley has a personal vendetta against his client, saying she is “enamored” with him.
