Recently Youtube released information on how it is enforcing its community guidelines. Within that report, it revealed that it removed over 8 million videos in a 3-month span. It claims that most of those videos were either spam or video with “adult content.” It also stated the removal process was mainly handled by computers, not humans. Approximately 6.7 million videos were flagged by a review machine before it got any views.

This revelation also opens the discussion of freedom of speech and who gets to determine what is appropriate. I know that it is their site and that the ultimate judgment of what content is displayed belongs to them. On the other hand, it should be an eye-opener for people not to rely on platforms that are able to eliminate your content whenever it chooses. With more restrictions being placed on sites like Facebook and Youtube, people need to place more emphasis on their networks and platforms. It doesn’t mean that you should stop using their sites for your own purpose. It just means that you should be aware that you have less freedom. A decline in freedom of speech, and expression will result in a decline in freedom of creativity and honesty. Especially when that freedom is being regulated by computers.
