Roseanne has, naturally, received a great deal of backlash online—owing to its working-class protagonist being a narrow-minded Trump supporter and star Roseanne Barr’s own passionate Trump support, which at times has taken her into the fringes of the alt-right.
On Monday night, Barr appeared on The Tonight Show and answered a few softball questions from host Jimmy Fallon about the backlash to her support of President Trump.
“Oh yeah, people are mad about that. But you know, I don’t give a fuck,” Barr told Fallon, to a surprising amount of laughter and applause from the in-studio audience in New York City.
“I mean, everybody had to choose for themselves, according to their own conscience, who they felt was the lesser of two evils,” she continued. “You know, everybody chose that, so I’m not going to put anybody down who didn’t vote like me. This is America, it’s a free country, and when you weigh it all together, I just felt like we needed a whole new thing. All the way. Bottom to top.”
Barr, 65, who previously ran for president in 2012 under the decidedly un-Trumpian Green Party, once claimed to The Daily Beast that she was the first person to tell Trump to run for president.
