Several Atlanta High School Seniors Tested Positive For The Coronavirus After Post Graduation Gathering

Several seniors of an Atlanta high school tested positive for the Coronavirus just days after the school held a drive-by graduation.

Six days after the event, The Lovett School’s Head of School Meredyth Cole and Head Nurse Shana Horan posted a letter to their school’s website alerting of the positive diagnoses.

“We want to let you know that the school has been notified by several Class of 2020 families that their students have tested positive for COVID-19,” the letter read. “Unfortunately the infectious nature of the COVID-19 virus means that most communities will be touched at some point, and we recognize how hard separation and missed milestones have been on the emotional lives of our students.”

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, it’s unclear of how many students have tested positive, but there was a student present at the event that had the virus.

It’s being reported that the unidentified student stayed in the car during the event but “later had company over for a graduation gathering, and then traveled out of town with friends,” according to officials.

A Lovett spokeswoman told AJC that about 75 employees attended the event and maintained social distances guidelines. Students and their families have reportedly remained in their cars for the entire event. Those that have been affected are working with health officials and the Department of Health.

A traditional graduation is expected to take place in July.

As of Monday, Georgia has confirmed more than 43,000 coronavirus infections, and at least 1,827 people have died from the disease.
