Solange on Grammys: Only 2 Black Album of the Year Winners in Last 20 Yrs

Solange initially let Frank Ocean do the talking, when on Sunday night she tweeted out a link to the Tumbler post in which the Blonde singer accused the committee of “cultural bias” in response to Taylor Swift beating out Kendrick Lamar for Album of the Year. By morning time the younger Knowles sister was back on Twitter with more to add, writing a post in which she seemed to encourage Black artists to create and build up their own show. “Create your own committees, build your own institutions,” she tweeted. “Give your friends awards, award yourself, and be the gold you wanna gold my g’s.”

While she was nominated for a leading 9 Grammy Awards, Beyonce would only prove successful in beating out the Best Music Video and the Best Urban Contemporary Album fields, thanks to her song “Formation” and album “Lemonade” respectively. But she couldn’t get past Adele in the major categories, coming up short for Best Song, Record of the Year and Album of the Year. The British songstress herself seemed to be taken aback by her victories over the 20 year music veteran, who is yet to have won the night’s final award.

“There have only been two black winners in the last 20 years for album of the year there have been over 200 black artist[s] who have performed,” Solange went on to write in her most literal tweet. Despite having taken exception to her sister’s losses, Solange’s night wasn’t all that bad. She took home her first ever Grammy with a win in the Best R&B Performance category.
